These are projects I made in my Junior year of high school at Sequoyah High School for SAS (Sequoyah Advanced Studies) Visual Arts
Four Walls and Adobe Slats - 2021 - pen and watercolor on paper
For this piece, I used a combination of pencil, pen, and watercolor on small papers to explore the theme of public vs personal space. The idea behind each media was to convey varying levels of connection and completion to each object illustrated. For the objects I deemed most public, such as a shopping cart and crosswalk button, I left them as only pencil drawings. This was meant to express how common they are in my life, and how I tend to tune them out. Additionally, these objects are very high contact and connect with many different people on a daily basis. For the next layer of objects, those among my household used by my entire family, I chose to finish slightly further as pen drawings. Finally, the innermost section I rendered with greater detail as watercolor paintings. These items are things that belong to only me and that I pay much more attention to.
Surveillance - 2021 - yarn and stuffing - 4 x 5 x 1.5 feet
For this piece, I crocheted yarn and stuffed it to create a large eyeball that explores perspective and surveillance present in our society, as well as the female gaze. The idea behind the media was to contrast the textures of an actual eyeball with that of yarn. Additionally, crochet is considered to be traditionally “women's work” so the piece can be viewed as part of reclaiming the female gaze. I found the eye an interesting subject because it can be interpreted in many ways and has numerous cultural significances attached to it. The eye also plays on surveillance in our modern world and how easily technology today can track you, which again contrasts to the very domestic and manual media the piece is made of.
Inhabitance - 2021 - acrylic on canvas - 20 x 16 inches
For my final piece, I used acrylic paints to paint my bedroom with a bright underpainting and moody overtones. This work contrasts with the first one, while still being a painting and representing myself, it does so in a new way: through the space in which I live. It depicts how one shows through the rooms they inhabit and the different scenarios they are perceived from. This piece was inspired by Ekaterina Popova's works and uses similar color palettes as well as the thought of depicting people through the space they live in.
